Abstract
Purpose: The objective of this review was to analyze the current literature and evaluate implant survival rates in the grafted sinus according to implant placement timing.

Materials and Methods: Articles on maxillary sinus graft performed between 1999 and 2010 were collected using electronic database MEDLINE. All articles were screened according to inclusion criteria; limited to clinical report, at least 10 patients, mean follow-up was at least 6 months.

Results: Simultaneous implant placement was performed in 1,872 patients and involved 5,015 implants. The follow-up period was 41.2 months and a total survival rate was 93.80%. The implant placement was delayed in 767 patients and involved 2,972 implants. The period between maxillary sinus elevation and implant installation ranged from 3 to 11.9 months and averaged 6.5 months. The mean residual bone height was 3.3 mm. A mean follow-up period was 41.6 months and a overall survival rate was 94.54%. The delayed implantation showed higher survival rates than simultaneous implantation, with 93.80% and 94.54%, respectively. This difference, however, did not reach statistical significance (p=0.170).

Conclusion: The maxillary sinus graft is a predictable treatment method showing high implant survival rates.
